Keep them warm past the driveway

Start with what a warm layer is not. These are insulating garments — fleece, sherpa pile, corduroy, padded shells — and their whole job is holding a dog's own heat in. None of that makes them rain gear: fleece wets through, and a coat that blocks wind is still not a waterproof shell. When the forecast is wet as well as cold, a suit from the protective-gear shelf goes over the layer rather than instead of it.

Then pick the shape by how much you need covered — and by how much dressing your dog will actually tolerate on a cold morning. A sleeveless vest covers back and flanks and goes on in seconds, which makes it the easy first coat for a dog who dislikes being handled. A two-leg pullover adds sleeved front legs and a panel that snaps under the belly, warmer across the chest where a dog loses most of its heat. Full four-leg suits cover the most and take the longest to put on. None of these is better than the others; they trade warmth against how many legs you thread before the walk starts.

Size from two measurements and never from the size code: chest girth at the widest point behind the front legs, and back length from the collar to the base of the tail. Chest is the one that decides — a coat that clears the chest can run loose along the back, while a coat that binds the chest is unwearable at any length. The codes do not carry across products either: a 3XL cut by one maker fits a different dog than a 3XL from another, which is why the fit table on this page sets every size run side by side in inches instead of letters. Suggested weight ranges are a starting point, not the rule; a deep-chested dog at the same weight needs the next size up.

Last, check how the coat handles the leash before the first walk rather than at the door. Some open a plain slit through the back panel so the clip reaches the collar underneath; some carry a ring stitched through the shell; some leave it to a harness worn under the coat. Each product page names the one it uses — and a slit is an opening, not a load-bearing point, so the collar or harness underneath is still what the lead pulls against.
