Description

A padded winter coat cut for big dogs: a reflective band around a drawcord collar, sleeves on the two front legs only, and the coat’s own metal ring on the back so the lead clips on without reaching underneath.

The dark is one of the ordinary reasons a winter walk gets cut short. This coat runs a reflective band the whole way around a tall stand-up collar, at about the height of a passing headlight, and threads a thin elastic drawcord through the top of it so the collar pulls in to the neck instead of standing open in the wind. One small toggle holds it where you set it.

On the quilted yoke just behind the collar there is a black metal O-ring, carried on a webbing strap that passes through two moulded loops stitched into the shell. The lead clips there. You are not pushing a hand under a padded coat to find the collar underneath, which is the small friction that decides whether a coat gets used or stays on the hook. Use the ring with the collar or harness your dog already wears; we publish no load rating for it.

It goes on like a jumper. Head through the collar, two front legs into the sleeves, and that is the whole job — there is no zip, no buckle and no snap anywhere on it. The cuffs are bound in soft black elastic so they sit on the forearm without riding up, and two lines of elastic gathering around the waist take up the difference between a deep-chested dog and a narrow one.

It covers the neck, chest, both front legs, the barrel and the hips. The two back legs are left free. That is what makes it quick to get on a big dog who will not stand still, and it is worth knowing before you order.

The shell is polyester with a water-repellent finish, so rain and sleet bead on the surface instead of soaking in, over a mid-weight polyester fill and a smooth woven lining. Water-repellent is not waterproof: there is no rating behind this coat and we are not going to invent one.

There is a 3 in loop-side patch panel on the shoulder if you want to add your own name or ID patch. No patch comes with the coat.

Six sizes run from a 22 in chest to a 37 in. Measure around the deepest part of the chest and work from that number — chest is what decides the size here, and the weight ranges in the chart are a guide rather than a rule.

Care & cleaning

Rinse or wipe down after wet walks and hang to dry away from direct heat — heat wears down the waterproof coating. Skip bleach, softener, and ironing.

Head, two front legs, done

Two sleeved front legs and an elasticated bound cuff are the only things to line up, and there is no zip, buckle or snap anywhere on the coat. It goes on the way a jumper does, so a dog who hates being dressed is out of the door in under a minute and the walk starts before either of you has lost patience.

When the wind turns

The collar closes down to the neck

A thin elastic drawcord runs out through two metal eyelets and locks with a single toggle, so the stand-up collar pulls in instead of standing open. The wind stops going down the neck, and standing still for five minutes stops being the part of the walk your dog wants to cut short.

When it turns to sleet

The water sits on top

The polyester shell is finished so rain and sleet bead on the surface rather than soaking in. The padding underneath stays dry and the coat stays about the weight it was when you left, which is the difference between finishing the loop and turning back at the corner. Water-repellent, not waterproof: there is no rating behind it and we will not invent one.

How do I measure my pet for the right size?

My pet is between two sizes. Which should I choose?

Size up. A slightly roomier fit keeps shoulders free and makes it easier to get on and off; too snug restricts movement. And if it does turn out too roomy, swapping down a size is free.

Will it keep my pet dry in heavy rain?

The coated shell is built to shed steady rain on everyday walks. In prolonged downpours some moisture can eventually work through seams and openings, so towel off and hang it to dry after very wet outings.

How do I get an anxious pet used to wearing it?

Let them sniff it first, then start with short indoor sessions with treats before the first wet walk. Most pets settle once they connect it with going outside.
