Description

A sherpa fleece vest for smaller dogs, with the zip down the back instead of over the head and two metal rings beside it, so the lead clips to the vest and there is no harness to fit over the fleece.

Most winter mornings with a small dog involve two pieces of kit: a coat, then a harness over the top of it. This vest carries its own pair of metal rings on short webbing loops, one either side of the zip, so the lead goes straight onto the vest.

The zip runs the full length of the back rather than the chest, which means the vest goes onto a standing dog instead of over its ears – the part most dogs object to. A tall sherpa collar stands around the neck, both front leg openings are bound in soft knitted rib, and a gathered elastic band across the belly takes up the slack between builds.

Outside is a dense sherpa pile; inside is a smoother fleece lining. There are no sleeves, no hood and no rear coverage – it is a vest, cut to cover neck, back and ribs and leave the rest of the dog free. It is a warm layer, not a rain layer.

Six sizes run from a chest of about 14 in up to about 24 in. Measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs, and read the chart from there – chest is the measurement that decides the size.

Rinse or wipe down after wet walks and hang to dry away from direct heat — heat wears down the waterproof coating. Skip bleach, softener, and ironing.

The zip runs the whole length of the back, so nothing has to be pulled over the ears or past the face. A front paw through each rib-bound opening, one pull up the spine, and you are done - which matters most with the dogs who have learned to walk away when a coat comes out.

Two metal rings sit on their own short webbing loops, one either side of the zip. On a cold morning that is one layer to put on instead of two, with nothing flattening the fleece where a harness strap would cross it. They are a clip point on a coat rather than a tested pulling anchor, so a dog who really leans into the lead still wants a proper harness underneath.

Small dogs lose heat fast, and the short loop round the block is the first one to get dropped when it is below freezing. Both front leg openings are bound in soft knitted rib rather than a cut edge, so the part that sits in the armpit is the part that gives, and the vest keeps its place stride after stride.

The outer face is a dense sherpa pile and the lining is a smoother fleece that slides over a dog's own coat instead of dragging at it. It is a warm layer and not a waterproof one - in real rain this is the wrong coat.

How do I measure my pet for the right size?

My pet is between two sizes. Which should I choose?

Size up. A slightly roomier fit keeps shoulders free and makes it easier to get on and off; too snug restricts movement. And if it does turn out too roomy, swapping down a size is free.

Will it keep my pet dry in heavy rain?

The coated shell is built to shed steady rain on everyday walks. In prolonged downpours some moisture can eventually work through seams and openings, so towel off and hang it to dry after very wet outings.

How do I get an anxious pet used to wearing it?

Let them sniff it first, then start with short indoor sessions with treats before the first wet walk. Most pets settle once they connect it with going outside.
