A padded winter coat cut for small dogs: the zip runs the whole length of the back, so only the head and two front legs go in, and two metal rings sit on the coat itself so the lead clips to the coat instead of a second harness underneath.
January is when a small dog’s walk quietly gets shorter. There is less of them to hold heat, and the coat in the drawer takes five minutes and a wrestling match to get on.
This one opens along the back. The zip runs the full length of the spine, so the coat lies flat, the head and two front legs go in, and one pull closes it. Quilted polyester outside, fleece against the skin, a synthetic fill between them, and an elasticated hem that gathers under the belly instead of flapping.
On the back, sitting over the zip, there is a side-release buckle with a metal ring on either side of it. The lead clips to the coat, so there is no second harness pulled on over the top and nothing doubled under the front legs. The webbing carries two rows of reflective stitching, which makes a low, dark dog easier to notice on the way home.
The two corduroy patches on the flanks are pockets, not trim. They open along the top, and a roll of bags fits in one.
Sizes run from a 14-inch chest to a 22-inch chest. Measure your dog’s neck and chest with a soft tape, leave about an inch of slack, and check the size chart below.
Rinse or wipe down after wet walks and hang to dry away from direct heat — heat wears down the waterproof coating. Skip bleach, softener, and ironing.

Getting out the door

The corduroy patches on each flank open along the top. They are pockets, not trim, and a roll of bags goes in one and stays there. One less thing in your hand on a cold morning, which mostly means one more hand free for him.
Walking home after dark
The webbing across his back and shoulders carries two rows of reflective stitching. Small dogs sit low and dark, and at four in the afternoon in January that is most of the walk home. It makes him easier to notice, which is enough to keep going out.
The first properly cold morning
The coat wraps the part of him that loses heat and stops before the hind legs, so he still moves and squats normally in snow. Quilted outside, fleece against the skin. The first cold snap stops deciding how far the two of you go.

Good to know

Size up. A slightly roomier fit keeps shoulders free and makes it easier to get on and off; too snug restricts movement. And if it does turn out too roomy, swapping down a size is free.
The coated shell is built to shed steady rain on everyday walks. In prolonged downpours some moisture can eventually work through seams and openings, so towel off and hang it to dry after very wet outings.
Let them sniff it first, then start with short indoor sessions with treats before the first wet walk. Most pets settle once they connect it with going outside.
