Find the right fit

Two different things get sized on this site, and they are not sized the same way. A carrier is sized by the room inside it against your pet’s weight and body length. A rain suit is sized by your dog’s own measurements — back length and chest girth — against that suit’s published chart. Start with whichever you are shopping for.

Carriers: how to measure

Weight: weigh your pet (step on a scale holding them, then subtract your weight). This is the most important number.
Length: measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
Height: measure from the floor to the top of the shoulders while standing.

Your pet should be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably inside the carrier.

Dog rain suits: how to measure

Three measurements size a four-leg rain suit, and you only need a soft tape and a treat.

Back length: from the base of the collar to the base of the tail, along the spine, with your dog standing square. This is the number that decides whether a suit is long enough.
Chest girth: all the way around the deepest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. This is the number that decides whether it closes.
Neck girth: around the base of the neck where a collar sits, for the suits that publish a neck column.

Measure over the coat your dog actually wears, not against a summer clip, and leave two fingers of slack under the tape. If your dog is between two sizes, size up — a four-leg suit has to clear the shoulders and hips for a full stride, and a suit a dog cannot move in is one that stays in the hall closet.

Rain suit size by breed

Breed weight is a starting point, not a fitting rule. Use it to narrow down which suits reach your dog at all, then measure the chest girth and confirm on that suit’s own size chart.

Past the top of this table — a full-grown Saint Bernard or Mastiff, the heavier Great Danes — weight stops being the useful number. Those dogs often sit inside the largest suit’s charted chest girth even when they are over its charted weight, so measure the girth and read the fit table from that column instead.

Why the size codes do not line up

These rain suits come from different patterns, and their size letters do not share a scale. On the Full-Cover raincoat, a size S is charted for a 26.8 in chest; on the Clear-Visor suit, a 2XL is charted for 22.4 in — so the smallest size on one suit is wider than the largest size on the other. The same 8XL label stops at a different weight depending on which suit is wearing it.

When in doubt, size up

If your pet is between sizes, choose the larger one for comfort — if it turns out too big, swapping down a size is free, while sizing up later costs the price difference. Still unsure?
