A four-leg rain suit for big dogs in a four-way stretch shell with heat-taped seams: a zip that runs the length of the back, two adjustable buckle straps, an underside left open so she can relieve herself without undressing, an opening that lets your own leash through, and a hood and tail sleeve that both lift off when you would rather go without.

Most rain coats stop at the back, which is why a big dog still comes home soaked from the elbows down. This one is cut as a full suit: four sleeves finishing in elasticated cuffs you can draw in at the ankle, a zip that runs the length of the spine, and two buckle straps across the back that you pull snug once and leave alone.

The one place it does not cover is underneath. The shell wraps her back, both flanks, her chest and all four legs and then stops: from behind the front legs through to between the hind legs the underside is left open, its edges bound in tape rather than cut and left raw, and both buckle straps run across the back, so nothing passes under her at all. That is what lets her go mid-walk without the suit coming off or you kneeling in the wet to undo it. It also means the belly itself is not covered — after a walk through soaked grass, that strip and her bare paws below the cuffs are what the towel is still for.

The shell is a four-way stretch fabric, so it gives where she does instead of holding her to one length of stride — which is usually what decides whether a full suit gets worn or shrugged off at the gate. Its seams are heat-taped rather than stitched through, so the joins have no needle holes for water to find. A stand-up collar keeps the wind off her throat, and between the two buckle straps and the elastic gathered through the waist, each size covers a span of chest girth rather than one exact figure — at 4XL that span runs 29.5 to 37 inches, so a barrel-chested Labrador and a leaner shepherd of the same body length both land in the same suit.

The hood carries a clear brim that sits above the eyes rather than over them, so she keeps watching the path while the rain stays off her head. A reinforced opening in the back panel lets your own leash clip straight through to her collar, so nothing about your usual setup has to change. Silver piping runs along both flanks and down all four legs, and in Hi-Vis Lime the whole suit reads from a long way off on a dark wet afternoon.

Everything that touches her is finished soft: the collar and tail openings are bound in tape rather than left as cut edges, the zip pull tucks under its own flap, and the hook-and-loop is a low-nap type that lets go of fur instead of holding on to it.

A rain suit spends its whole life against skin, and sooner or later a cuff ends up in someone’s mouth, so what the shell is dyed with is worth asking about. The mill states this fabric meets the REACH restrictions on substances of concern and passes a German azo-dye test, the check for the dye compounds restricted in clothing worn next to skin. That is the mill testing its own cloth rather than lab work of ours, and we would rather tell you which it is than let a badge speak for us.

The tail sleeve is the part you can change your mind about. It lifts off, so the same suit works for a dog whose tail you would rather leave bare and for one you want covered end to end. Sizes run from an 18 lb dog up to a 121 lb one, so measure her back length and chest first and work from the chart rather than from her weight alone. The chart carries the sleeve lengths themselves, front and rear, because on a full suit the legs are usually what decides the fit: a Corgi, a Dachshund, or a Basset will find sleeves cut for a standard leg far too long, and a tall, leggy build like a Standard Poodle will find them running a little short even in the right chest size. One thing the chart still cannot tell you: at XXL and below the tail sleeve is cut narrow, so a heavily feathered tail is happier left bare.

Where breeds usually land, as a starting point rather than an answer: a Bichon or a miniature Poodle around L; a Shiba around XL; a Beagle, a Border Collie, or a lighter Samoyed around XXL; a Husky, a Sheltie, or a smaller Labrador or Golden Retriever around 3XL; a heavier Golden or Labrador around 3XL Plus; a Standard Poodle, a German Shepherd, or a full-grown Labrador around 4XL; a big Shepherd or an Alaskan Malamute around 4XL Plus; and the largest Malamutes and Shepherds at 5XL. Two dogs of the same breed can sit two sizes apart, so the tape still decides.

Rinse or wipe down after wet walks and hang to dry away from direct heat — heat wears down the waterproof coating. Skip bleach, softener, and ironing.
